The Unplugged Computational Thinking as a Possibility for Neurodiverse Children to Develop Knowledge about the Decimal Number System

Authors

Abstract

This article forms part of the initial stages of an ongoing investigation within the Graduate Program in Mathematics Education at the Federal University of Juiz de Fora, Brazil. The research aims to generate knowledge about Unplugged Computational Thinking (UCT) applied to pedagogical strategies focused on the development of understanding regarding the properties and characteristics of the Decimal Number System in the early years of elementary education. Its relevance lies in the understanding that knowledge of Unplugged Computational Thinking can reframe the educational process for teachers while also supporting the development of mathematical reasoning in neurodiverse children. The methodology adopted follows a qualitative approach, grounded in the theoretical contributions of Wing and Brackmann, who explore the concept of Computational Thinking, and anchored in the Design Science Research methodology, with the aim of achieving the proposed objectives. To implement this investigation, a set of activities was developed based on experiments and observations described by Kamii (1995), Lerner (1995), and Soares (2010), related to the process of constructing logical-mathematical knowledge. Preliminary analyses indicate that Unplugged Computational Thinking contributes significantly to the learning of mathematical concepts and promotes progress in the learning processes of neurodiverse children, as it serves as a strategy that supports the formulation and organization of non-conventional logics and encourages the sharing of acquired knowledge. The data suggest that Unplugged Computational Thinking constitutes a valuable educational resource that supports both the teaching and assimilation of the principles and properties of the Decimal Number System.
