Abstract

The relation of literature, specially, between poetry and painting has roused controversy discussions in the academic field. In sight of possible analogies between verbal text (what is said) and visual text (what is seen), I intend to analyze the possible correlation between the reading of some fragments taken from the part I (lira I) of Marília de Dirceu by poet Tomás Antônio Gonzaga and the painting “The hireling shephered” (1851) by British painter, William Holman Hunt, pointing out how the bucolic characteristics are independent from temporal limits.

Key-words: neoclassicism; poetry; painting; bucolic.
